What the $280 Million Parks Bond Could Mean for West Boca

Palm Beach County voters will decide on November 3 whether to authorize up to $280 million in bonds for parks, sports facilities, trails and botanical gardens. Several projects on the county's proposed list are in or near West Boca.

What West Boca could receive

The county's current project list includes:

• Burt Aaronson South County Regional Park: Modernization and expansion of sports facilities, improved access and additional shade. Plans also identify possible improvements to restrooms, playgrounds, trails, picnic areas, lighting, the dog park and water-access areas.
• Sandalfoot Cove Park: Renovation of the sports complex.
• Pinewoods Park: Renovation of the athletic complex, including its restroom, concession and equipment-storage building.
• West Boca High School and Eagles Landing Middle School: Potential sports improvements designed for student use and public access when school facilities are available.

The broader South County list also includes exhibit modernization at Green Cay Nature Center and later phases of the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens expansion.

What would it cost homeowners?

The county estimates an annual cost of $5 for each $100,000 of taxable property value. That is taxable value—not necessarily the home's market price.

If approved, the charge would appear as a parks debt line on property-tax bills beginning no earlier than fiscal year 2030.

What the vote would—and would not—do

A “For the Bonds” vote would authorize the county to borrow the money and repay it through property taxes. It would not mean every project begins immediately.

Individual projects would still move through planning, design and community input. The county's project list may also change as plans and funding are finalized.

Two nearby public meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, September 23:

• West Boca Branch Library: 4–5 p.m.
• Glades Road Branch Library: 6–7 p.m.

Residents can ask county representatives about both the parks proposal and a separate library bond appearing on the ballot.

Bottom line: West Boca has several projects on the proposed list, but voters are authorizing a countywide funding plan—not approving a separate guaranteed budget for each individual park.
